New mic pres!
I have at last taken delivery of the new valve mic pres which Jeff at Re-run Electronics designed and built for me, housed in an old german portable power supply. I have been producing tracks with Joel Sarakula for his new album over the last few weeks, so I have been putting them through their paces and… besides looking completely incredible, they sound fantastic! I asked Jeff if he could find some way for me to be able to have the option of driving the valves super-hard and also to incorporate some of the feel of the Thermionic Culture Vulture, which I really love but can’t afford anymore as they seem to have doubled in price(?)
Well, he came up with something very simple but perfect.. in his own words:
“Design-wise, it is a very simple preamplifier. The Character control changes the EF86 from pentode to triode operation and everything in between. Essentially a gain control, this is especially useful when a bit of distortion or truly large amounts of gain are needed. From there, the Level control determines how much signal goes to the output tube– a triode-strapped EL95– which drives a balancing transformer.”
I’m now on the waiting list for one of his spring reverb units, look out!
